Maintenance Methods

Main introduction

Swords mainly consist of three parts: the blade, the scabbard, and the fittings. To make maintenance easier, here are some daily care tips to keep in mind:

Swords should be stored in a dry place. During use, avoid touching the blade with your hands to prevent sweat stains from corroding the surface. After use, or if the sword comes into contact with water or is exposed to humid weather, wipe it with a clean, dry towel or soft cloth. Then apply an appropriate anti-rust oil, such as machine oil, sewing machine oil, or specialized rust-preventive oil. When wiping the blade, be attentive and focused to avoid cuts or injuries caused by the sharp edge.

A soft cloth with a small amount of oil can be used to regularly wipe the wooden scabbard. This helps maintain its smooth and glossy appearance while preventing cracking and shrinking.

The fittings of swords are mostly made of materials such as gold, silver, and copper, with copper accessories being the most common. To preserve their quality, avoid exposure to gas and keep them dry to prevent corrosion or deterioration.

In addition to the basic maintenance steps mentioned, it’s crucial to handle swords with care to avoid accidental damage. For long-term storage, ensure the blade is lightly oiled and wrapped in a soft, dry cloth to protect it from moisture. Avoid storing swords in leather scabbards for extended periods, as the natural oils and moisture in leather can accelerate oxidation and rust formation. If the sword is kept in a wooden scabbard, periodic inspection is recommended to ensure no moisture has seeped inside.

When displaying swords as decorative items, avoid placing them in direct sunlight or overly humid environments. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause discoloration or warping of the scabbard and fittings, while high humidity can promote rust on the blade and tarnish on the fittings. Using a dehumidifier in display areas can help maintain optimal conditions.

For cleaning tarnished fittings, use a gentle polishing cloth designed for metals. Avoid abrasive materials that might scratch or damage the surface. When polishing, always move in the direction of the metal’s grain to maintain its original texture and luster.

Lastly, swords are not just tools or decorative items; they are pieces of history and craftsmanship. Proper maintenance not only preserves their appearance but also ensures their value and functionality over time. Treat them with respect, and they will remain a treasured part of your collection for years to come.
